Take a knife - ...you could maybe skin a fish, cut a chicken's throat, skim your toenails or your fingernails, then you could kill somebody with it too. By the time you think of all the things you could do with a knife, then you got the blues. It don’t take but five verses to make a blues. Think of five things you can do with something and that’s it. Think of five things that woman done to you and then you got the blues. Was it she stayed out all night or she stole away your money or was it she didn’t fix your food right or something? ......all that."
"Escribo blues en base a experiencias, de cosas que he experimentado, las cosas que hago, la forma en que pienso sobre la vida y lo que me ha sucedido. Porque puedes coger cualquier cosa y escribir un blues sobre ello. Puedes coger una silla, un cuadro, un hacha, cualquier cosa, un cuchillo, cualquier cosa y empezar a escribir un blues sobre ella. Porque puedes pensar en las diferentes cosas que harías con un cuchillo. Coge un cuchillo... puedes pelar la piel del pescado, cortar la garganta de un pollo, e incluso podría matar a alguien con él también. En el tiempo que piensas en todas las cosas que podrías hacer con un cuchillo, ahí tienes elementos para escribir un blues. Yo no uso más que cinco versos para hacer un blues. Piensa en cinco cosas que puedes hacer con algo y eso es todo. Piensa en cinco cosas que te ha hecho una mujer y ya tienes un blues. ¿Estuvo fuera toda la noche o te quitó tu dinero o no te hizo bien la comida? ... Todas esas cosas."
Big Bill Broonzy, autor del tema Hey, hey que podemos escuchar interpretado por Eric Clapton en su unplugged de la MTV, tenía bastante claro lo que necesitaba para escribir un blues (la verdad es que no se cortaba un pelo el tío...)
Big Bill es uno de los pioneros del blues de Chicago aunque realmente nació en Mississipi. Tocó con banda aunque la gente prefería escucharlo a él solo con su acústica. Maestro del blues folk rural y del fingerpicking. Dicen de él que ha sido uno de los más grandes cantantes de blues de todos los tiempos.
Aquí tenéis una joya del vídeo de Hey, hey. Os recomiendo que escuchéis también la versión de Eric Clapton del Unplugged, que por cierto le hace bastante justicia. Clapton también hizo una versión de su Key To The Highway en el álbum Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.
